Good afternoon
My name is Vincent de Keijzer and I am here to present you the project vergeetmeniet. Vergeetmeniet is Dutch for don’t forget me, remember me. The subtitle of the project is : smart archiving for a digital afterlife
There is no subject you can think of or there is somebody, somewhere collecting it. And of course nowadays collectors have more and more digital data/content. Digital objects, digital information about the objects and digital documents, related to the objects. Cultural heritage institutes are very interested in this digital content of collectors, especially for their crowdsourcing projects. Projects they undertake to enrich their systems with the knowledge of their public. The problem with the digital content coming from the collectors is that most of it is of a very poor quality. CH institutes have to put in a lot of effort to convert this content to their databases
Vmn offers collectors practical tools to perform their hobby or profession. And it shows them the way to important sources of information, starting with Europeana. Sources they can use to find digital objects of their interest, other collectors and specialist help. Working with vmn tools delivers re-usable, durable data. Data CH institutes can use to do what they do best: transform interesting digital content into digital heritage.
You might wonder if I am the right person to do the job. To answer that question I can refer to a long career in cultural heritage. I have seen the rise of the phenomena of digital heritage and always kept up to date with the latest developments. I built a large network I can use and, last but not least; I have the right age.
I have the right age, because I am part of the first generation that, on a large scale will start wondering what will happen with their digital remains. A generation that will realize they don’t have enough time to organize and update their neglected digital archives. A generation that will fear their inheritors won’t find their way in their highly personal filing systems. A generation that will face the fact that their contributions to the social web are not guaranteed for the long term. Vmn offers collectors of my generation and generations to come durable digital afterlife.
Thank you
